The engineering case
Built to survive what Thai diving does to a gun.
Every claim below is something Rob Allen has put on a load cell or break test and published to the public YouTube channel. None of it is our marketing language — it is Rob's own engineering evidence, with the video links so you can verify any number yourself.
Railed barrel vs unrailed
On Rob's test rig, an unrailed aluminium tube deflects 50-60 mm under double-rubber load. A railed barrel stays straight. Every Rob Allen speargun is railed for exactly this reason — under power, unrailed barrels flex, and the spear goes low.
Watch Rob Allen's test →Handle tested to 300kg compression
The Vecta 2 handle — the one under every current Rob Allen gun — holds past 300kg of compressive load before anything cracks. Most real-world handle abuse (a gun dropped on a boat deck, jammed into a rod tube) is under 40kg of peak load. The engineering margin is ten times any real scenario.
Watch Rob Allen's test →17,000 trigger cycles vs 219
Rob's cycle test on two triggers: a Kevlar-loaded Rob Allen trigger survived 17,000 clean cycles. A stainless-steel equivalent on a competitor gun failed at 219. The difference is the trigger material, not the mechanism design — Rob uses Kevlar reinforcement because stainless fatigues.
Watch Rob Allen's test →Plated spring-steel shafts, not stainless
Rob's 2023 shaft test: a 316 stainless shaft bends permanently at ~95kg of pull. A Rob Allen plated spring-steel shaft of the same diameter holds past 180kg. In Thai reef shots where the spear often hits hard coral, that is the difference between a bent shaft after every missed shot and a shaft that springs back straight.
Watch Rob Allen's test →Roller muzzle — the modern option
Rob redesigned the roller muzzle in 2025. Both rubbers pull the spear forward, which means the barrel stays straight even under heavy bands — no barrel flex at all. Rollers are not gimmicks; they are the answer to the deflection problem on over-powered standard guns.
Watch Rob Allen's test →Band power loss — why we sell spares
Latex rubber loses measurable power within 8-12 weeks of regular use. Rob has empirical decay curves on the channel. In Thai humidity the decay is faster — which is why I suggest keeping a spare rubber in your bag and swapping every 4-8 months. Rob Allen's layered-dipped latex lasts longer than single-press rubbers, but no rubber lasts forever.

Before you buy
Spearguns — common questions
Which length for my diving? +
Under 75cm for holes and reef work. 90-100cm is the all-rounder for Thai reefs. 110-130cm for dogtooth, wahoo, and open-water GT. 140cm+ is bluewater only — you will not be able to swing it around structure.
Rail gun vs roller — what is the difference? +
Railguns are simpler and more reliable. Rollers hit harder and quieter for the same gun length, but the pulley system adds maintenance. New shooters start on rails.
How long do the rubbers last? +
Rob Allen amber rubber in Thailand heat lasts 6-12 months of regular use. Rinse with fresh water after every dive, store out of sunlight. Replacement is cheap and we stock all diameters.
Are these the real Rob Allen guns, or replicas? +
Every gun ships direct from the Rob Allen factory in Durban to our warehouse on Koh Samui. Invoice on file with the factory for every order. Listed on the Rob Allen global dealer locator as the only authorised Thailand distributor. Grey-market gear does not carry that trail.
