Why buy Rob Allen gear in Thailand (and where from)

The Thai spearfishing market is full of grey-market listings and knock-offs. Here is how to buy genuine Rob Allen with warranty, and why it matters.

Why buy Rob Allen gear in Thailand (and where from)

If you have searched “Rob Allen Thailand” on Google, Facebook Marketplace, Lazada, or Shopee, you have already seen the problem. Listings everywhere. Prices all over the place. No clear way to tell what is real, what is grey-market, and what is straight-up counterfeit. Here is how the actual system works, and how to buy without getting burned.

The Thai Rob Allen market, honestly

Rob Allen operates on a single-distributor-per-country model. One authorised channel per territory. That is how they protect brand integrity, warranty liability, and pricing consistency for divers. Thailand has one official distributor. That is me. You can verify it yourself on the Rob Allen dealer locator page, and you can see the proof on the distributor status page on this site.

Everyone else selling Rob Allen-branded gear in Thailand falls into one of four buckets:

  1. Personal imports. A spearo brought a gun in from Australia, Durban, or Europe for their own use and is reselling it. The gun is real, but the warranty does not transfer. If it breaks, they cannot help you and neither can Rob Allen.
  2. Grey-market resellers. A shop in Thailand that bought bulk stock from an authorised dealer in another country and imported it, usually without paying proper import duty. Real product, no warranty in Thailand, and the shop has no relationship with Rob Allen HQ.
  3. Counterfeits. Guns stamped with Rob Allen branding that came out of factories in Asia that Rob Allen has nothing to do with. These show up on Lazada, Shopee, and some Facebook groups. Materials are worse, tolerances are worse, and the trigger can fail on a loaded gun. Which is dangerous.
  4. Official distribution. One channel. One warranty path. Full customs paperwork. That is what you want.

Why single-distributor exclusivity exists

Rob Allen is a small operation by consumer-goods standards. They build in Durban, South Africa. They sell into dozens of countries. If they allowed every shop that wanted to stock their guns to do so, the warranty system would collapse. Who honours it? Who ships replacements? Who trains the shop on spec?

Single distributor means one person per country who:

  • Orders directly from Durban with full customs paperwork.
  • Registers serials into the Rob Allen system.
  • Handles all warranty claims locally, with Rob Allen backing.
  • Knows every SKU they stock because they personally use them.
  • Is accountable. If the service is bad, Rob Allen can and will pull the rights.

That last point is why distributors are motivated to do good work. There is no “eh, they will never find out” option. The relationship is real, two-way, and audited.

How to verify any Rob Allen seller in Thailand (take 2 minutes)

Before buying from anyone selling Rob Allen gear in Thailand, run this three-step check.

Step one: dealer locator

Go to roballenspearguns.com. Find the dealer locator. Filter by Thailand. If the seller is not listed, they are not official. End of story.

Step two: serial registration

Ask the seller what serial number your gun will ship with and whether it will be registered to you in the Rob Allen warranty system. Official distributors do this as routine. Grey-market sellers cannot do it at all.

Step three: customs paperwork

Ask how the gear arrived in Thailand. An honest answer from an official distributor sounds like “air freight from Durban, customs cleared at Suvarnabhumi, 10 percent import duty paid, 7 percent VAT on CIF plus duty.” A grey-market seller will either dodge the question or say something vague about “bringing it in.”

If all three check out, you are buying right. If any one fails, walk.

What “official” actually gets you

Beyond the warranty, a few practical things matter day to day:

Spec guarantee. When I sell you a Snapper 90 (RGSNP09), it is a Snapper 90 to current Rob Allen spec. Rubber thickness, shaft diameter, muzzle build, all current production. Not a 2018 production run someone had sitting in a Bangkok warehouse.

Parts compatibility. Rubbers, shafts, trigger parts, muzzle bungees all match the current generation. When you need a replacement rubber in 18 months, the one I ship fits the gun you have.

Straight answers before the sale. Ask me anything about any SKU and I will tell you what I actually think, including when a cheaper option is the right choice. I have no interest in talking someone into a 130 cm bluewater gun they do not need.

Straight answers after the sale. Something broke? WhatsApp me. I reply. It is a one-person operation. That is the point.

What about price?

Thai retail on Rob Allen runs about 40 percent over Durban wholesale. Here is why:

  • Air freight from Durban to Bangkok.
  • 10 percent Thai import duty on the wholesale-plus-freight value.
  • 7 percent Thai import VAT on top of that.
  • My margin, which is fair and in line with Rob Allen’s suggested Thai MSRP.

Grey-market sellers skip some of those costs, which is how they list 20 percent under me. The math only works if you assume nothing will ever go wrong with your gear. Give it two seasons in Thai salt water and you will see why that assumption is expensive.

Where to buy from

Anywhere that ships to Thailand from an official Rob Allen channel is fine. In practice, that means one of three options:

  1. This site. 3-day national delivery, Thai baht pricing, Stripe checkout, shipped by me from Koh Samui. Full range here.
  2. Order from overseas Rob Allen distributor. Fine if you are willing to pay international shipping, handle Thai customs yourself, and deal with the fact that warranty claims now route through that country’s distributor, not me. Realistic for bluewater specialist items if you are chasing a specific SKU.
  3. Direct from Durban. Rob Allen HQ sells direct in limited cases. Same caveats as option two, plus longer lead times.

For 95 percent of Thai-based spearos, option one is the right call. That is not because I am telling you to buy from me. It is because the shipping math, the duty math, and the warranty math all line up in your favour.

A note on counterfeits

The counterfeits are getting better. The badges look right. The black anodising looks right. Then you load the gun and the trigger feels wrong. Or the muzzle cracks on shot three. Or the line release slips and the shaft ends up wedged in reef with a tag line going slack.

Rob Allen Durban publishes counterfeit alerts when a new batch hits the market. If you are unsure about a gun you already own, send me the serial number and a few photos. I can usually tell inside of 30 seconds.

The bottom line

Buy real gear. Buy it through a channel that stands behind it. In Thailand, that is one distributor, on the official dealer locator, with customs paperwork on every shipment. That is the entire test.
